New Zealand Update #3 - Northisland

Jetzt sind wir bereits über drei Wochen in Neuseeland und somit folgt heute unser 3. Neuseeland Update. Was wir bisher so erlebt haben findet ihr hier und hier. Jetzt haben wir noch unsere letzten Tage in Auckland, bevor wir Neuseeland verlassen - ein Video über unsere Reise durch die Nordinsel folgt natürlich auch noch ;-)
Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach
Nach Taupo fuhren wir weiter nach Rotorua. Leider musste man dort für alle heißen Quellen (bis auf eine, die wir dann gefunden haben) sehr viel Eintritt zahlen und das war es uns dann wirklich nicht wert, da wir ja schon sehr schöne heiße Quellen kostenlos erlebt haben (mehr dazu hier). Der Gestank in Rotorua war leider wirklich unausstehlich nach alten, fauligen Eiern und somit haben wir nur einen (Shopping-)nachmittag dort verbracht - wenigstens der war sehr erfolgreich. Weiter ging's dann nach Hamilton, wo wir wieder einen typischen Reisesonntag mit Besuch im Fitnessstudio & Wäsche waschen verbrachten. Nach Hamilton ging's nach Hahei zur berühmten Cathedral Cove. Hier kamen wir spät abends erst am Freedom Campingplatz an, welcher direkt beim Einstieg zum Cathedral Cove Wanderweg liegt, und wurden dann von einem atemberaubenden Sonnenaufgang begrüßt.
Nachdem wir uns die Cathedral Cove angesehen haben fuhren wir gleich weiter zum Hot Water Beach. Beim Hot Water Beach gibt es zwei Stellen wo in einem täglichen Zeitfenster von 1-2 Stunden mit Schaufeln Löcher in den Sand gegraben werden können, welche sich dann mit bis zu 60°Celsius warmen Wasser füllen. Zu unserem Glück kamen wir gerade zu dieser Zeit an und konnten die ganzen Einheimischen & Touristen (es waren wirklich Massen an Leute da, was wahrscheinlich an dem Feiertag "Queens Birthday" lag) dabei beobachten, wie sie mit ihren Schaufeln zu den Quellen gingen. Wiedermal ein wirklich tolles Naturerlebnis in Neuseeland :-)

Am oberen Ende von Neuseeland
Nach dem Hot Water Beach machten wir uns auf den Weg zu unserem nächsten Campingplatz, welcher schon oberhalb von Auckland lag. Leider war, wie schon erwähnt, Feiertag und daher kamen wir leider in einem Megastau und somit verbrachten wir den restlichen Tag im Auto und kamen sehr spät am Campingplatz an. Am nächsten Tag fuhren wir weiter nördlich nach Whangarei und machten unseren Übernachtungsstopp in Kawakawa. Kawakawa ist nur für eine Sache bekannt und dass ist das öffentliche Hundertwasser WC - haha ja das wird wirklich als Sehenswürdigkeit beschrieben und sonst gibt es da gar nichts. Am Mittwoch machten wir uns dann auf in den Norden zum Cape Reinga, der nördlichste Teil von Neuseeland. Wir kamen am späten Nachmittag an und waren fast die einzigen Besucher. Wie ihr an unsren Fotos sehen könnt, war die lange Fahrt es auf jeden Fall wert.

Cathedral Cove & Hot Water Beach
From Taupo we drove to Rotorua. Unfortunately, all the Hot Springs there were to expensive vor our (backpacking-)budget but we have already experienced very nice hot springs for free (more on that here ). The stench in Rotorua was unfortunately really obnoxious to the old, rotten eggs and thus we only have one (shopping) afternoon spent there - at least that was very successful. Next then we went to Hamilton, where we spent a typical sunday at the gym and the laundromat. After Hamilton we went to Hahei to the famous Cathedral Cove. We arrived late at night only at the campsite at Freedom, which is right by the entrance to the Cathedral Cove trail, and were then greeted by a breathtaking sunrise.
Once we have been at the Cathedral Cove, we went on immediately to Hot Water Beach. At Hot Water Beach, there are two places where you can be dug in the sand in a daily time window of 1-2 hours with shovels and the wholes then fill up with 60 ° C warm water. Fortunately for us, we arrived just at this time and could all the locals & tourists (there were really masses of people there, which was probably due to the holiday "Queens Birthday") observe how they went with their shovels to the sources. Again a really nice nature experience in New Zealand :-)
At the upper end of New Zealand
After the Hot Water Beach, we made our way to our next campsite, which was already above Auckland. Unfortunately, as was already mentioned, holiday and therefore, unfortunately, we came to a traffic jam and so we spent the rest of the day in the car and arrived very late at the campsite. The next day we drove further north to Whangarei and made our overnight stop in Kawakawa. Kawakawa is known for only one thing and that is the public Hundertwasser Toilets - haha yes that is really described as attraction and otherwise there is nothing. On Wednesday we went then to the north to Cape Reinga, the northernmost part of New Zealand. We arrived late afternoon and were almost the only visitors. As you can see from our men photos that long drive was worth it in any case.
